park

Working with Angus Council’s Leisure Services Department and a play equipment consultant called ‘Playpractice’ ideas for the Community Park were developed. The experts, the children, were then consulted to identify which pieces of play equipment they found exciting and challenging.

This level of involvement was key to the success of the community park, and the children got involved in all stages of the planning, the artistic designs for the boundary fence and practically helping with the planting of the Sensory Garden.

Then came the small issue of the estimated £300,000 needed for the groundwork and to build the park, this was a massive amount for a small community group to raise and many people believed it could not be done. This started a very nervous two years for the association as funding applications were completed and that long wait to find out if each application has been successful or not.

The first good news came from Fresh Futures, who run the National Lottery programme called ‘Transforming Your Space’ with a fantastic £56,000. Soon after, Forward Scotland who administer the Community Environmental Scheme awarded £38,097.

Angus Environmental Trust administering the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme agreed to give £30,000 and Communities Scotland the government department that oversees housing and regeneration awarded £60,000 from their Social, Recreational and Environmental Programme. Angus Housing Association received £40,000 through Communities Scotland’s Wider Role Fund to be used for play equipment. The Big Lottery ‘Awards for All’ programme donated £5,000 and Angus Housing Association donated £1,000.

This was then followed up by awards from Hillcrest Housing Association of £4,750 and the Arbroath Rotary Club with a further £1,200. The Cliffburn Community raised £1,200 from a ‘small change collection’ and local fundraising. Angus Council provided technical services and their in-kind contribution was valued at £31,900. The final funding came from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts, donating £20.000 and a shortfall of approximately £9,000 was covered by Angus Council’s Housing Department.

The funding was finally in place and construction could begin !
