Policy Statement

People First Cliffburn recognises that in society individuals and groups are subjected to unlawful and unfair discrimination on the grounds, amongst others, gender, marital status, race, nationality, disability, age, sexual orientation, background, religious beliefs and political opinions. People First Cliffburn oppose all forms of unlawful and unfair discrimination and will ensure that, wherever practicable, individuals and groups are treated equally and fairly both within the framework and the spirit of current equal opportunities legislation. People First Cliffburn will work towards full use and recognition of the talents, skills and experiences of our management committee, staff, volunteers and members. We are committed to promoting, reflecting and serving a diverse community and we believe that everyone has fundamental rights that must be protected.

 

People First Cliffburn remit

People First Cliffburn was established to promote, for the public benefit, the community of Cliffburn and Hayshead areas of Arbroath, of regeneration in areas of, amongst others, social and economic activity; education and employment; health and environment issues; improvement or provision of public facilities and amenities, relief of poverty and the reduction and prevention of crime and anti social behaviour.

People First Cliffburn and the Policy refer to the ‘community’ of Cliffburn and Hayshead. This includes the general public living in the above areas and those who visit or utilise the facilities within. The members, volunteers, staff and management committee of People First Cliffburn and organisations contracted to carryout activities on behalf of People First Cliffburn.

Aim

People First Cliffburn aims to ensure that the community, management committee members, volunteers, staff, members are treated solely on the bases of their merits, abilities and potential regardless of gender, marital status, race, nationality, disability, age, sexual orientation, background, religious beliefs or political opinions. This is based on a commitment to pursue best practice and encourage community participation, fully and equally.

People First Cliffburn aspirers to

  • Create an ethos of equal opportunities within the organisation encouraging individuality and diversity 

  • To develop a sense of personal responsibility for developing equality

  • Identify and challenge discrimination within the community

 

Code of Practice

Management Committee Responsibility

It is the responsibility of the management committee to ensure that all activities and events are planned, organised and promoted in a way that does not prevent participation of one of the above groups. This could be by direct discrimination or indirect discrimination where conditions, planned activities, physical surroundings or requirements adversely affect one of the above groups, which cannot be justified in terms of fairness, financial provision or safety.

The management committee are responsible to oversee fair treatment of all and maintain and improve collective knowledge in best practice and legislation through training in the policy and codes of practice, provide resources as necessary, and encourage an atmosphere of equality and inclusion.

It is the responsibility of the management committee to investigate complaints of discrimination or victimisation that become evident within the organisation or through the complaints procedure, ensuring prompt and effective action.

It is the responsibility of the management committee to monitor, review and continually strive to improve the policy and codes of practice within the organisation.

 

Code of Practice on the Involvement and Employment of Disabled persons.
                                     
Aim

People First Cliffburn is committed to pursuing good practice involving disabled persons within the activities and events carried out by the organisation. Recognising that disability issues do not just cover mobility but many other difficulties including hearing and sight impairment, head injury, learning difficulties and mental health.

Guiding Principles

Planners of events and activities should take time to consider and introduce those activities which can involve disabled and non disabled persons without special equipment or cost.

Volunteers and staff will encourage participation within events and activities by adopting a ‘can do’ attitude.

Access to properties and services should be open to all and continually improved as the organisation develops and resources allow.

Applications will be encouraged for disabled people to volunteer within the organisation and also suitably qualified disabled persons, if employment opportunities become available. 

The management committee will ensure that where practical and financially viable, disabled volunteers and staff are provided with the necessary support and equipment to enable them to carry out duties or activities effectively.
